THANK YOU! I have wondered for years why there was no modern biography of Ripley. I read the Bob Considine bio with great interest - he alludes to some interesting aspects of Ripley's personal life (within the confines of 1961 good taste). Please tell the real/whole story as best you can. I look forward to it!

I disagree. The article about a nation's collapse is legitimate, and Lewis' writing about it is ok - when he sticks to the relevant subject matter. But why the unneccessary, unexplained, and sometimes innacurate forays into the psyche of not just the Irish but all those of Irish ethnicity? The article never really ties together the armchair psychology, immature gossipping and old wives' tales with the facts of the disaster and the failure of leadership. So why was much of this pablum included then? Ah, TO ASK THE QUESTION IS TO MISS THE POINT.

The fact is that this piece - to the extent it strays from the neccesary facts and analysis - is a hate letter to the Irish and all people of Irish ancestry. Lewis is clearly making a disguised attack within the piece. Either he is a bigot outright or simply ignorant. If those portions I found objectionable were written in a more raw form, they could easily be used to foment hate and lead to discrimination against all Irish. Oh yeah, would VF let him write this way about all Jews in the world or all Africans?

Can't wait! Should get there the evening of July 27. We'll be hungry, and I'll be very thirsty for beer. The kids can drink water from a hose.

Hi Billy, Thanks so much for the plug. Glad you enjoyed it. I feel lucky to have gotten to know Raymond before it was too late. And yeah, I bet there's another whole book about the numbers running. Tied up with other things now, but I'll keep it in mind. Take care!

Thanks for the feedback. One problem with using "Believe It or Not" in the title is there's a risk of it getting lost among all the other books entitled "Believe It or Not." The current thinking is that we may use "Believe It or Not" in the subtitle somehow. But the publisher will make the final call.
